About the Hike

At 2914 m, Vihren is the highest peak in the Pirin Mountains and one of the most impressive summits in the Balkans. Its striking marble slopes make it a landmark visible from afar, and the ascent is considered one of the classic hiking experiences in Bulgaria.

The route follows the traditional trail via Kabata. Depending on weather conditions and the group’s pace, we may descend via an alternative route through The Kazanite Cirque. Throughout the hike, spectacular views gradually unfold towards the peaks and glacial lakes of Northern Pirin, as well as many other mountain ranges across Bulgaria. With a bit of luck, we may also encounter the wild mountain goats that are characteristic of the region. From the summit, we will have a view of one of Europe’s southernmost glaciers, located in the Kazanite area.

The terrain is typical of Pirin – rocky, steep, and demanding. Large sections of the route pass through limestone and marble boulders of varying sizes, making the hike both challenging and highly rewarding.

After the descent, we will visit Baykushev’s Pine, the oldest coniferous tree in Bulgaria and one of the most iconic landmarks of the Pirin Mountains.
