About the Hike

On the last weekend of October we head to Belasitsa for a two-day adventure that will reveal some of the mountain’s most beautiful and less-visited corners. We will immerse ourselves in the colorful autumn scenery of ancient broadleaf forests, visit two impressive waterfalls and reach the highest peak of Belasitsa.

The route follows mainly forest trails and dirt roads. Although the second day is longer, the terrain is pleasant and non-technical. A good level of fitness and willingness to spend two consecutive days in the mountains are required.

Day 1: The Waterfalls of Belasitsa and Kongur Hut

Our first destination is Sramezhlivetsa Waterfall. At 21 meters high, it is the tallest waterfall in the Bulgarian part of Belasitsa.

We start from the village of Kamena and follow the course of the Kameshnitsa River upstream. The trail gradually enters a beautiful forest that at this time of year glows in shades of gold, orange and red. After approximately two hours we reach the impressive waterfall, where we will have plenty of time to relax and take photos before heading back.

After a short transfer to Belasitsa Hut, the second part of the day begins. A pleasant and nearly flat trail leads us to the beautiful Leshnishki Waterfall. From there we return to the hut and continue through the forest on our way to Kongur Hut.

Gradually gaining elevation while surrounded by magnificent old trees, we reach Kongur Hut, where we will spend the night and prepare for the ascent of Belasitsa’s highest peak the following day.

Day 2: Along the Ridge to Mount Radomir

Early in the morning we leave Kongur Hut and set out towards the highest point of Belasitsa.

The route begins through the forest but soon emerges above the treeline. Along the way we reach a panoramic viewpoint marked by a cross, offering spectacular views of the Pirin Mountains. Shortly afterward we step onto the main ridge of Belasitsa near Kongur peak.

From here the route follows an old border road running almost evenly along the ridge. Gradually, breathtaking views unfold towards Bulgaria, Greece and North Macedonia. We will also see Lake Kerkini, which is featured in one of our other hiking programs.

The final ascent takes us to Radomir Peak (2029 m), the highest peak of Belasitsa. From the summit we will enjoy impressive views both near and far. After a well-deserved break and plenty of photo opportunities, we retrace our steps, pass Kongur Hut and descend to Belasitsa Hut, where our two-day adventure comes to an end.
