About the Trip

Join me for a three-day adventure in one of the most beautiful and least explored parts of the Central Rhodope Mountains. We will hike through colorful autumn forests, visit remote mountain hamlets, explore ancient rock sanctuaries, and reach panoramic summits offering spectacular views across Bulgaria and Greece.

Along the way, we will discover the springs of the Arda River, walk all the way to the Greek border, and enjoy breathtaking vistas stretching toward Rila, Pirin, and Slavyanka. On exceptionally clear days, we may even spot Mount Athos and the Greek islands of Samothraki and Thassos.

After each day in the mountains, we will return to our welcoming guesthouse in the village of Arda, where we will enjoy traditional Rhodope dishes and experience the renowned hospitality of the region. We will also enjoy two hearty Rhodope breakfasts.

Day 1: Gudevitsa, Gozdevitsa and Kom Peak

After our journey to the Rhodopes, we begin the first hike of the program. Passing through the hamlets of Gudevitsa and Gozdevitsa, we enter a colorful autumn beech forest.

Our destination is Kom Peak (1568 m), where an ancient sanctuary once stood and where a small chapel can be found today. Just below the summit lies a panoramic meadow with beautiful views over the endless Rhodope ridges and scattered mountain hamlets.

We complete a circular route around the peak, following a different trail on our return and visiting the first ancient rock sanctuary of the trip.

In the late afternoon, we check into our cozy guesthouse and end the day with a delicious Rhodope dinner.

Day 2: The Springs of the Arda River, Golyam Yurt and Ardin Peak

The second day of our Rhodope adventure begins with a hearty local breakfast before we set out on the most panoramic hike of the trip.

The route starts from the picturesque hamlet of Bilyanska. Before entering the beautiful beech forests, we stop at an impressive viewpoint overlooking the valley, its surrounding forests and peaks, and the scattered neighborhoods of Arda and Gorna Arda villages.

Along the way, we visit the springs of the Arda River, where we take a short break before continuing through the autumn landscape.

Gradually, we reach the highest point of the trip: Golyam Yurt (1742 m). The views from the summit towards the Eastern Rhodopes and numerous Greek mountain ranges, including the highest peaks of Thassos and Samothrace, are simply unforgettable.

Here we step onto the Bulgarian-Greek border and continue with a short walk to Golyam Yurt’s smaller neighbor, Ardin Peak (1730 m). Even more spectacular panoramas await us: Mursalitsa Ridge, Pirin, Rila, Slavyanka, Falakro, Menikio and numerous other mountain ranges in both Bulgaria and Greece. On exceptionally clear days we may even spot Mount Athos.

Afterwards, we descend back to Bilyanska and return to our guesthouse for another evening of traditional Rhodope cuisine and local hospitality.

Day 3: The Sanctuary Above Gorna Arda

Following breakfast, we set off on the final hike of our Rhodope getaway.

Although shorter than the previous days, today’s route is every bit as rewarding. The trail leads through peaceful forests and scenic clearings before reaching the ancient rock sanctuary above Gorna Arda. For centuries, this remarkable place has attracted people with its commanding views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

We take time to explore the sanctuary, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, and soak in the final panoramic views of the trip. Surrounded by the colors of autumn and the tranquility of the Rhodopes, it is the perfect place to reflect on the experiences of the past three days.

After returning from the hike, we begin our journey back home, bringing to a close a memorable autumn adventure filled with mountain scenery, traditional food, and authentic Rhodope hospitality.
