About the Hike

If I had to choose a single route that showcases the very best of Northern Pirin, this would be it. The hike to Dzhano Peak via the Kremenski Lakes and Popovo Lake combines everything that makes Pirin so special. Few routes offer such a variety of landscapes in a single day, from walking along the shores of some of Pirin’s most beautiful glacial lakes to admiring them from high above. Throughout the day, our eyes will wander across endless panoramas of the mountain’s highest summits and rugged granite ridges.

Our journey begins at Bezbog Hut and the beautiful lake of the same name, which we will pass on its eastern shore. From the very start, magnificent views of Dzhangal and Sivriya dominate the skyline. After descending to the Retidzhe River, we begin the main ascent towards the Kremenski Lakes.

The Kremenski Lakes consist of seven permanent and two seasonal glacial lakes, nestled in a spectacular cirque beneath Dzhano and Sivriya. The three largest lakes are particularly impressive. This is one of Pirin’s most scenic areas, yet it often remains overshadowed by the more popular routes around Vihren and Bezbog.

Beyond the lakes, we continue our ascent to Dzhano Peak (2668 m). The summit offers exceptional views towards some of Pirin’s most beautiful peaks, including Chengelchal, Yalovarnika, Kamenitsa, Kralev Dvor, Dzhangal, Polezhan, and Bezbog, to name just a few. The panorama from Dzhano is among the finest in Pirin and remains a lasting memory long after the hike is over.

After a well-deserved break, we descend towards Popovo Lake, the largest lake in Pirin. From its shores, we continue back to Bezbog Hut before taking the lift down to Gotse Delchev Hut. We leave behind a day filled with spectacular scenery, varied terrain, and some of the most beautiful corners of Pirin. As a fitting end to the adventure, we’ll celebrate with a delicious meal at a nearby restaurant.
