About the Hike

Join me on a journey through one of the lesser-known corners of Rila National Park. Although the hike starts from Semkovo, less than an hour from Bansko, it is very likely that we will encounter only a handful of other hikers throughout the day. This sense of solitude is part of what makes the area so special.

Our adventure begins where the asphalt road towards Semkovo Hut ends. From there, we follow the “Footprints of the Glacier” Nature Trail, passing through beautiful conifer forests that gradually give way to ancient Bosnian pines and dense alpine pine (dwarf mountain pine) vegetation.

The trail to the picturesque Vapa Lakes takes around 3 hours. These two glacial lakes shaped by the ancient ice that once covered these mountains. Along the route, we will be surrounded by a remarkable variety of alpine flowers, including endemic and relict species that can only be found in a few locations across the Balkans. Usually there are also a lot of blueberries along the route in August.

After a short break by the lakes, we continue towards the ridge above them. Roughly an hour later, we reach Vapa Peak. Although the summit itself is broad and relatively inconspicuous, the views are anything but. From here, we enjoy panoramas across some of the most beautiful parts of Rila, while the mighty Pirin Mountains rise in the distance above the Vapa Lakes like a postcard landscape.

For our return, we follow an alternative route through the scenic Gorni Kuki area before descending back to Semkovo and our starting point.
